Vrijheid en de toekomst van het internet

Bij OR Books is net Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet verschenen. Het boek is grotendeels gebaseerd op drie interviews die Julian Assange opnam voor zijn tv-show World Tomorrow op de Russische zender RT. Hij sprak er uitgebreid met Jacob Applebaum (Tor Project), activist Jeremie Zimmermann (La Quadrature du Net) en Andy Müller-Maguhn (Chaos Computer Club).

The harassment of WikiLeaks and other internet activists, together with attempts to introduce anti-file-sharing legislation, such as SOPA and ACTA, indicate that the politics of the internet have reached a crossroads. In one direction lies a future that guarantees, in the watchwords of the cypherpunks, ‘privacy for the weak and transparency for the powerful’; in the other lies an internet that allows government and large corporations to discover ever more about internet users while hiding their own activities.

Co-auteur Jeremie Zimmerman geeft in The Guardian een overzicht van de terreinen waarop die tweestrijd zich afspeelt en waarop in het boek wordt ingegaan.

We covered a wide range of issues: from surveillance to data protection, from corporate influence over politics to citizen participation and action, transparency and accountability, from liberalism to anarchism, from copyright enforcement to culture, from flying killing robots (drones) to representation of crime scenes depicting abuse of children (child porn).

Het boek zelf hebben we nog niet gelezen, maar het klinkt alvast veelbelovend.
