Socioloog Ulrich Beck overleden

“The scandal over the prism surveillance programme has opened up a new chapter in the history of the global risk society. In recent decades we have become acquainted with a series of global risks: climate change, the nuclear threat, the risks of the financial system and terrorism. And now we have the global digital risk, which threatens our freedom. … What we need is a powerful player with a genuine interest in raising public awareness of this risk and who will push for political action. The first one that springs to mind is the democratic state. But that would be like having a wolf look after the sheep. After all, it’s the state that has created this hegemonic power in cooperation with the new media to protect its main interest, national and international security. … In this respect the threat to freedom is no different to the threat of climate change: there is no player on an international level who is in a position to confront it.”
