Debat met Jef Ausloos nav zijn doctoraat “The Right to Erasure: Safeguard for Informational Self Determination in a Digital Society?”

The author notes that the Internet – originally designed to make it very hard to monitor or control individual behaviour – has become the breeding ground for some of the most important information and power asymmetries of our time. One of the main elements enabling these asymmetries, primarily playing out between individuals and commercial entities, is the processing of (personal) data.

The thesis investigates the role of individual empowerment over personal data in countering power asymmetries online. This dissertation’s aim is to dissect ‘data empowerment’ in the information society through the lens of the right to erasure in Article 17 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The conclusion is positive: the GDPR’s right to erasure does play a meaningful role.
